Coming to Hostel Munich without knowing anything about the Germans and their culture can be pretty irritating. You may have heard about some stereotypes or know a number of clichés from school or work – but what’s behind all that? No worries! Hostel Munich has got your back. We trotted out a hackneyed cliché for you. Let’s see if everything they say is true:

Hostel Munich Cliché Number 1: Germans are loud and noisy

Encountering German people for the first time in your life everyone seems to be a noisy troublemaker. Germans are always screaming, they also laugh at the top of their voice. Furthermore, Hostel Munich knows, the language sounds very aggressive and harsh. For the English word “butterfly” a German would say “Schmetterling” – doesn’t that just ring plain hard? So it would seem.
Hostel Munich believes: The German language has a whole other pronunciation than the English one. That also can explain the speakers’ volume. If a German ever gets louder than necessary it’s because of enthusiasm or the person is just getting angry – but isn’t that a situation we all have been facing at least once in our lives?

Hostel Munich Cliché Number 2: Tidiness and keeping rule over everything

That’s at least what a visitor from Berlin once told Hostel Munich. It’s been the first cliché he came up with. Actually the fact, that a Berliner would say that of his city and country is surprising. Every German – including the people living in Berlin – thinks of the capitol as dramatically chaotic.
We from Hostel Munich do believe this cliché is true. But it is a positive one. Germany has got a lot of rules and laws and the majority is keeping them. Starting with traffic rules: crossing over a street in the country is easy and safe compared to countries like Mexico or America. Here, passing a street with a green traffic light can be life endangering. We might be exaggerating a bit, but you all know what Hostel Munich is talking about.
The traffic fact might only be a little one, but you know what they say: Cleanliness is next to godliness.

Hostel Munich Cliché Number 3: Germans feed exclusively from bratwurst, beer and potatoes

Every country has its own traditions and typical recipes. Bratwurst and potatoes might not be the only thing German people eat, but one can say in general that it’s on the menu at least twice a month. Hostel Munich says: there is absolutely nothing wrong with that! You can make a lot of different dishes out of one potato. There are so many combinations. The thing with the beer is, people only think Germans do drink it like water because of the Oktoberfest. But the biggest folk festival is only taking place once a year. The rest of our lives we drink alcohol just as often as everybody else – Hostel Munich.
Conclusion: True and very tasty!

The lesson is clear: Hostel Munich believes that Germans are just plain different than Americans or Italian people for example. They love their traditions and rules and don’t have a problem keeping up with these. But you should not take anything for granted or too serious. You can have a lot of fun with a German person, not everyone is walking around wearing garb and complaining about live.
